The Importance of Diversity in the Workplace
Companies are embracing diversity in the workplace more than ever before and although there is still much work to be done, the workplace is starting to reflect our diverse society. This change may have to do with the fact that companies with diverse leadership perform better financially than those that don’t but regardless of the motive, it’s progress. A diversity workplace is beneficial for a company because it provides a better understanding of customers, helps the company perform better and encourages good talent to apply to the company.
Understanding the Customer
Companies should want employees that represent their customers. In doing so, companies get an inside look at what the ‘customer’ wants. Who doesn’t want such insight?
Diverse groups perform better because of different backgrounds, experiences, and skills. These differences allow innovative, creative ideas to be generated.
Brings in Talent
Applicants are looking for companies that embrace diversity. Employees are likely to stay working for a company that supports and welcomes them. In fact, employee retention and engagement rate is correlated to a sense of ‘belonging.’ Companies that make employees feel belonged encourage employees to be their best selves at work, which in turn allows employees to produce their best work and ultimately yields positive financial returns to the company.
Companies are starting to understand that diversity matters. And diversity isn’t limited to gender and race, there’s also gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, and religion. The time to take diversity seriously and implement diversity and inclusion programs and practices is now.
