Appreciating the Ones Behind the Scene on Administrative Professionals’ Day

Today is Administrative Professionals Day. This day recognizes and celebrates the contributions of employees who are behind the scenes AKA secretaries and administrative assistants. These individuals work day in and day out, but often do not get the recognition they deserve.

Brief History

During World War II, there was an increased need for skilled administrative personnel, especially in the United States. In order to recognize the contributions of secretaries and other administrative personnel as well as support their personal development and to help attract people to administrative careers in the field, the National Secretaries Association was formed. In 1952, the first National Secretaries Week was organized and the Wednesday of that week became known as National Secretaries Day. As the National Secretaries Association organization gained international recognition, the special week and day changed its name to Professional Secretaries. In 2000, the special week and day were once again renamed, this time to its current name: Administrative Professionals. The name change was due to keeping pace with changing job titles and expanding responsibilities of the modern administrative workforce.

Ways to Celebrate

There are many ways to celebrate the work of those behind the scenes. Here are some of the most common ways:

  • Taking employees out to lunch or buying lunch for the entire office
  • Gifting employees flowers
  • Gifting employees shopping gift certificates/ gift cards
  • Gifting employees assorted gift baskets
  • Thank them for their service. Words of appreciation go a long way.

Regardless of how your company decides to celebrate this day, remember those who filter your phone calls, schedule your week, take your messages, and who overall help make your day a bit more manageable.
