When receiving a job offer most people feel the urge to accept immediately, after fumbling through the whole interviewing process, memorizing all the staff’s names, and buying several new loafers, it’s understandable that you’re ready to sign on the dotted line. Although new job offers are tempting it’s important to do some preliminary detective work to ensure you’re making the right decision. Here are 5 red flags you should look out for, before accepting a new job offer.


High Turnover Rate

While different industries can expect different turn over rates, having a high rate can be reason for alarm. A high turnover rate can indicate poor management or a stressful work environment. When deciding whether you should take a job, try to talk with current employees and get their take on the environment. It’s also a good idea to ask management directly what they think is the reason why employees don’t stay for very long. Although there may be exceptions to the rules, you can assume people are leaving for a good reason and if you were to take the job in no time at all you’re going to want out.


No Growth

When accepting a job, especially if you’re young, you need to take into consideration the company’s ability to foster growth. Ideally, a company invests time and effort to groom you to move up in the organization, if there are no learning opportunities you can only assume that growing and moving forward is not in the picture. When addressing the subject of growth, ask the higher-ups questions like ” Are there professional development workshops?”, Does the company usually hire from within ?” Based on the answers you receive, you will be better equipped to gauge if the job is the right fit for you.


The Environment Isn’t Quite Right

Sometimes a company’s environment just isn’t your vibe. When taking the tour at your potential workplace, don’t just look around, try to envision yourself there. Trust your gut, maybe the office feels claustrophobic, or the air is too stuffy, or maybe you just can’t put your finger on it, whatever the reason may be, if the space doesn’t feel right don’t force it.


The only thing worse than turning down a job offer is accepting one that has bad idea written all over it, do your due diligence and research the company, make a pro and con list, and if all else fails trust your gut.
