How Politicians use Social Media Marketing

Thanks to the power of social media, politicians have been able to reach voters across the country. According to Statista, 79% of the U.S population uses social media. Therefore, it is beneficial for politicians to use social media platforms to better reach their voters.

Social media has made it so much easier and less expensive to reach the younger generation as opposed to using traditional marketing. Before social media, politicians would have supporters going from door to door, posting flyers, and traveling to small towns to sway undecided voters. Now, politicians have the option to utilize social media as a platform for their candidacy.

With the help of a platform that reaches so many American voters, famous people have taken their support to social media, posting about who has their vote. For example, in the 2016 Presidential election, many famous actors such as Amy Schumer, Kerry Washington, Pharrell Williams, Mike Tyson, Stephen Baldwin, and many more, showed their support by using the front running candidate’s infamous hashtags to show support. This is a great way to get publicity since these Americans have millions of followers.

Also, many politicians have been able to reach the younger generation through the use of social media influencers. In the 2016 Presidential election, former President Barack Obama sat down with famous YouTube influencer, Liza Koshy, who has 17 million followers, and spoke about the importance of voting. This video was #1 trending on YouTube with over 12,000 comments.

Social media has given many politicians a way of reaching an audience larger than ever before, in a timely manner, as opposed to traveling city by city, talking to one community at a time.
