Google and Android New AR Tool for Social Distancing
Knowing how to social distance can be tricky. “Just imagine one alligator in between you and everyone else.” Floridians totally know that one, right? How about, “imagine the length of three refrigerators.” Still can’t visualize six feet? Well, since most people carry a phone with them, Google and Android created a new tool for the pandemic’s safety precautions. The augmented reality (AR) tool is designed to let you know if you’re at least 6 feet away from anyone around you.
If you have an Android, open the Chrome browser and search SODAR or go to goo.gle/sodar to launch the social distancing tool! Your phone will use augmented reality to map your surroundings, superimposing a 2 meter (6 foot) radius around you through your camera view.
The SODAR social distancing tool is neat, free, and doesn’t require a download to use. While this app is effective and accurate in depicting the range of space you’re keeping between yourself and others, it isn’t going to make you stay a certain distance away. Being mindful of social distancing at every moment is crucial to keep you, your friends, coworkers, and family healthy. This way, we can stop the spread of COVID-19.
