The Best Advertisements of 2021 (So Far)
We’re more than halfway through 2021, and there have been a ton of great commercials so far. It’s been a very challenging year for every industry, and the advertising industry is no different. The pandemic changed how in-person shoots operated, and some advertisers had to think differently about what kind of messages they should send. After a difficult year in 2020, the advertising industry had to consider what kind of themes would resonate the most with people entering a post-pandemic world.
Advertisers met the challenge and have produced incredible advertisements and commercials throughout the year. While many of the most popular ads come from a big source of advertising spending, the Super Bowl, there have been great ads all year round. From the weird to the hilarious, there was no shortage of noteworthy ads.
These are some of the best advertisements of 2021 (so far).
Bud Light – “Last Year’s Lemons”
Bud Light’s big commercial for the Super Bowl doesn’t hesitate to poke fun at what a bad year 2020 was. In a marketing push for their new line of hard seltzers, Bud Light plays with the classic saying, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. Their new lemon-flavored hard seltzer takes center stage as several humorous scenes play out involving raining lemons. After all, 2020 was a lemon of a year.
Rocket Mortgage – “Certain Is Better”
Another popular Super Bowl commercial came from Rocket Mortgage. The hilarious Tracy Morgan answers the question, “What’s the difference between pretty sure and certain?” In a variety of situations where you’d want to be certain about something, Morgan continues to quip, “I’m pretty sure”. For example, “I’m pretty sure these mushrooms aren’t poisonous” to a family on a camping trip or “I’m pretty sure there’s a parachute” to a skydiver about to jump out of a plane.
State Farm – “Drake from State Farm”
State Farm always puts out great advertisements, especially during Super Bowl season with NFL players like Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes. Their big commercial this year adds Drake to the mix, as each of the main characters meets their “stand-ins” for a hypothetical commercial, with Drake playing the Jake from State Farm character. Drake adds a hilarious element to this star-studded advertisement as he learns not to interrupt the classic State Farm slogan.
Cheetos – “Wasn’t Me”
Cheetos went with some big names on their big commercial this year featuring Mila Kunis, Aston Kutcher, and Shaggy. This spot is a playful spin on Shaggy’s classic hit song, “It Wasn’t Me”. In several different scenarios, Kunis is caught around the house “orange-handed” as she’s been snacking on Cheetos. Each time Kutcher accuses her of this, Kunis replies with Shaggy’s refrain, “It wasn’t me”. Shaggy appears in the background throughout the ad and delivers a clever line at the end to tie the commercial together.
Adidas – “End Plastic Waste”
In a move to embrace everything green, Adidas released a commercial advertising their new Stan Smith shoe made with recycled and sustainable materials. Narrated by the king of green, Kermit the Frog, the spot highlights Adidas’ commitment to social responsibility by releasing a shoe with more environmentally friendly materials. The commercial shows a variety of green environments as a backdrop to their message, as well as featuring cameos from popular green pop-culture characters like Yoda from Star Wars and Groot from Marvel.
While 2021 isn’t over yet, there have been so many great advertisements this year that deserve a round of applause.
